FAQs
The Etna All Around E-Bike tour is the most geographically complete experience on Mount Etna. Designed as a full-day journey, it allows participants to cross multiple volcanic environments in a single ride, revealing the complexity of Europe’s highest active volcano.
The tour starts on the southern slope of Etna. Early in the route, we approach the recent lava flow of February–March 2026, where volcanic heat was still present in certain sections. This area offers a direct and tangible understanding of how active and dynamic the volcano remains.
From the southern sector, we gradually move north, riding along sections of the famous Altomontana track — a natural path that circumnavigates Mount Etna from south to northeast. Along the way, we encounter several refuges where short breaks allow the group to hydrate, eat snacks and appreciate the silence of this less-traveled part of the volcano.
We pass near traditional Pagghiari, historic rural shelters once built with straw, broom and birch branches by shepherds and farmers. These structures reflect the adaptation of local communities to volcanic life and seasonal mountain activities.
Reaching the northern slope near Rifugio Casermette (Monte Spagnolo), we stop for a packed lunch. For faster or more energetic groups, lunch can be organized inside one of the refuges after the off-road section.
The route continues across the 1981 lava flow, which threatened the town of Randazzo. That eruption produced extensive lava fields that reshaped the northeastern flank. Two route variants are available across this section, and the guide selects the most appropriate option.
We then enter the historic Piano dei Dammusi, site of the longest eruption in Etna’s recorded history (1614–1624). Here we visit the renowned Grotta dei Lamponi, one of the most beautiful lava tube caves on Etna, formed by long-lasting eruptive activity that created extensive lava channels.
During the ride, we also visit volcanic hornitos, small conical structures formed by escaping gases within lava flows.
The final off-road section crosses the impressive Ragabo pine forest, the largest forested area on Mount Etna, with trunks reaching 25–30 meters in height. From Rifugio Ragabo, the tour officially concludes. Depending on group level and timing, we may continue on asphalt toward the village of Milo, offering panoramic views of the summit craters on one side and the Ionian coast on the other.
This experience operates from April to December, depending on snow conditions. It is a long and physically engaging day, focused on endurance, landscape diversity and geological understanding.
